December 31, 2021

by Administrator

At the start of 2021, I embarked on a new chapter in my professional journey by leaving my comfort zone. After three years and five months at Union Bank, I made the decision to step away from my familiar role and embrace the uncertainties that came with it. It was a significant change for me, as I transitioned into a full-time software engineer position for the first time in my five-year career.

Career and Financial Milestones

Setting my sights on becoming an Assistant Manager before turning 30, I achieved this goal at the age of 29 years and 4 months. Remarkably, I was recognized as the youngest assistant manager in my tier-1 bank. The demand for software engineers, coupled with the grace of God, facilitated my career growth from a Banking Officer to an Assistant Manager within a span of six months. In September 2020, I reached out to a friend, expressing my desire for a new job, and that's how I found my opportunity at Access Bank. On December 6th, 2020, I joined Access Bank as a Software Engineer (Senior Banking Officer). This new role and grade brought forth fresh challenges and the need for personal and professional growth. I had to expand my programming knowledge and enhance my emotional intelligence. In February 2021, First Bank announced a technology bootcamp for recruiting members for their IT team, and the rest, as they say, is history. On June 28th, 2021, I began my journey at First Bank as a Senior .NET Analyst (a peculiar job title for a software engineer). This promotion resulted in nearly doubling my income, and I'm grateful to Joshua Akinyoade for providing me with an opportunity to work on a steady income side project during the first year.

Vacation and Financial Adjustments

In August 2020, my friend Fred and I embarked on a piggyvest target savings plan to save for a vacation in Dubai. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, I made the difficult decision to close the savings account and allocate the funds elsewhere.

A New Living Arrangement

On March 5th, 2021, just a day after celebrating my 29th birthday, my supervisor at Access Bank requested that I resume working from the office daily, while others continued working remotely. This decision was prompted by the perpetual noise disturbances during virtual meetings caused by people fetching water outside my house. It was an adjustment I had to make to ensure a conducive work environment.

Personal Highlights

Amidst these professional milestones and adjustments, I also welcomed the arrival of my nephew into the world. They have brought immeasurable joy and happiness to my life, and I am grateful for his presence.

As 2021 draws to a close, I reflect upon the challenges, accomplishments, and personal growth I have experienced throughout the year. It has been a transformative journey, filled with new opportunities, financial adjustments, and precious moments with loved ones. I look forward to what the future holds as I continue to pursue my career aspirations and embrace the various chapters of life that lie ahead.
